Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is facing intense backlash after mocking Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott at a public event over the weekend. Her comments, which critics say targeted Abbott’s disability, have ignited outrage and prompted a formal censure resolution from Texas Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX).
Weber announced plans to introduce a resolution condemning Crockett’s remarks, calling them “vile” and “discriminatory.” In a statement to Fox News, he praised Abbott’s resilience while slamming Crockett’s rhetoric.
“The story of our great governor of Texas is one of unwavering resilience and perseverance,” Weber said. “Meanwhile, the actions of Jasmine Crockett – stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks – are nothing short of reprehensible.”
Crockett’s controversial remarks were made during a Human Rights Campaign event, where she referred to Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” a widely understood reference to his use of a wheelchair. Abbott has been paralyzed from the waist down since the age of 26 due to an accident while jogging. Weber’s forthcoming resolution describes Crockett’s words as “discriminatory in nature” and part of a “continued series of inappropriate comments” from the freshman Democrat.
Facing mounting criticism, Crockett attempted to clarify her remarks, insisting they were aimed at Abbott’s policies rather than his disability. She took to X to explain, stating, “I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.”
Despite her defense, Weber remained steadfast in his criticism, stating on X: “Jasmine…words have meanings & actions have consequences. I look forward to introducing my resolution to censure you for your words and actions.”
Crockett fired back, dismissing the outrage as political theater. “Instead of obsessing over and hanging on to my every word, maybe my political foes should focus on doing the work of the people who elected us to improve their lives,” she wrote. She also accused her critics of hypocrisy, urging them to “keep that same energy for all people, not just your political adversaries.”
With tensions escalating, the censure resolution is expected to fuel further partisan clashes in Congress, adding to the already fierce political divide between Texas Republicans and Democrats. Whether the resolution will gain enough traction to pass remains to be seen, but the controversy has undoubtedly put Crockett in the national spotlight.
