Tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially confirmed that SpaceX’s Starship will embark on its first mission to Mars at the end of 2026, carrying Optimus, Tesla’s highly advanced humanoid robot.

Musk, who has long envisioned making humanity a multiplanetary species, stated that if all goes well, humans could land on the Red Planet by 2029, though he acknowledged that 2031 is a more realistic target.

Following Musk’s announcement, the official X account for Optimus responded with just two words:

“Hold on.”

Starship: The Most Powerful Rocket Ever Built

According to SpaceX, Starship is the most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, capable of carrying:

🚀 Up to 150 metric tonnes (165 US tons) fully reusable
🚀 Up to 250 metric tonnes (275 US tons) expendable

On its official mission statement page, SpaceX reiterates its long-term vision:

“I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.” — Elon Musk

Musk recently fueled excitement about Mars exploration when he was spotted at the White House wearing an ‘Occupy Mars’ T-shirt, further signaling his commitment to interplanetary travel.

A Historic Week for SpaceX and NASA

Musk’s groundbreaking Mars mission announcement comes during an eventful week for SpaceX.

On Friday, SpaceX and NASA successfully launched a new crew to the International Space Station (ISS). This mission aims to replace astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stranded in space for nine months due to technical failures aboard Boeing’s Starliner.

🚀 Wilmore and Williams originally launched on June 5, 2024, with a scheduled return on June 13, 2024.

🚀 However, thruster failures and helium leaks forced NASA and Boeing to delay their return, deeming the journey too risky.

🚀 The new crew, launched by SpaceX, will now take their place aboard the ISS.

Elon Musk’s Bold Vision: Making Humanity Multiplanetary

Musk has long been vocal about his ambition to colonize Mars, frequently emphasizing the importance of expanding human civilization beyond Earth.

With Starship set to launch for Mars in 2026 and a potential human landing within the next decade, SpaceX is making rapid strides toward turning science fiction into reality.
